I am writing this letter in response to the possibility that SOAR Academy, the Clarke County School District's alternative school, may be privatized. Clarke County Schools Superintendent Phil Lanoue hasn't yet formally recommended this move to the school board, but we at SOAR feel it is imminent.

I've been working at SOAR for six months, and it has been exceptionally apparent that the professionals who've been there far longer than me are very committed. They work in an environment where battery occurs, where students use profanity, and where the building might be a threat to their health.
You'd have to visit SOAR to understand the climate control issues, the vermin, the leaks, the outlets that don't work and other problems. SOAR staff have been counting the days to the opening of the new building nearby, with the idea that we'd be working there in the fall. Now, we not only face losing a chance to work in a state-of-the-art building, but losing our jobs as well. Although Lanoue has promised us seniority for available jobs if he recommends the elimination of our jobs, we still have to wonder how many of us will be unemployed in the fall.
