In December 2008, Joseph Williams, principal of SOAR Academy, the Clarke County School District's punitive alternative school, resigned after protesting that his superiors had suggested he scale back on disciplinary actions with the student body.

Last week, six months after Williams' resignation, the Banner-Herald reported a SOAR student was found to have a loaded shotgun in his backpack at school (Story, "Police: Student had sawed-off shotgun," May 10).
What is it that the school board is aiming to achieve in its disciplinary policy? I would also like to know when it thinks we should discipline students. Before or after the gun is loaded? After someone is hurt? Perhaps our leaders should reread "Lord of the Flies" for a more accurate depiction of what happens to undisciplined children.
When exactly in the past 40 years did we start drifting away from accountability and correct moral behavior and expectations?
